Chairman, Board of Trustees ! Dear Friends,

The world as we know it is getting smaller. This is due in part to globalisation and the advancement in information technology. Indeed, many now use the terminology "global village" to describe today's brave new world.

But not all people are benefiting from this inevitable breaking down of artificial boundaries. One of the groups most affected is the special class of people who suffer from one form of disability or the other.

This class of people often are not only excluded from the mainstream of the society, but are denied basic rights. A recent United Nations document confirms that both de jure and de facto discrimination against people with disabilities have a long history and take various forms. They range from invidious discrimination, such as the denial of educational opportunities, to more subtle forms of discrimination such as segregation and isolation.

A couple of years ago, a few young professionals living in Lagos (Nigeria) under the auspices of the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates Association (UNIFEMGA) deemed it fit to sensitise their fellow professionals to the plight of the disabled in the Nigerian society by organising a public lecture titled "The Disabled in Our Society: Our Duties, Our Failings".

The lecture delivered to an eminent audience by Professor Taoheed Adedoja on 25th October 1998 convinced all present of the need for a programme and indeed a structure to address the issues raised. That structure is what we are presenting to you today, the Network Project for the Disabled.

Success, the saying goes, is a journey and not a destination. Fully, aware of this fact, we at NPD are resolved to make a success of this endeavour. To do this, we need to overcome three critical challenges: sourcing for funds, application of the funds, and remaining above board at all times.

We look forward to having you at our side every step of the way. Please join us in this noble cause.

Thank you.

Prof. Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa, CON, NNOM
Chairman, Board of Trustees
